2024:

A rough diamond of exceptional size, weighing 2,492 carats, has been discovered at the Karowe Mine in northeastern Botswana by the Canadian mining company Lucara, in the heart of Botswana’s diamond mining region. This stone is one of the largest diamonds ever mined in the world and the largest ever found in Botswana.

In terms of weight, it is comparable to the famous Cullinan Diamond (more than 3,100 carats), which was discovered in South Africa in 1905 and later cut to adorn, among other things, the British Crown Jewels. Experts estimate that this is likely the second-largest diamond ever discovered in the earth.

The discovery was made possible by a recent X-ray technology, which has been in use since 2017 and makes it possible to locate and extract very large stones without breaking them. According to experts, this technological advancement suggests that other diamonds of comparable size may be found in Botswana’s diamond mine and throughout the region.

The exact value and quality of the diamond have not yet been disclosed, but the stone will be officially presented to Botswana’s President, Mokgweetsi Masisi, and to the press. The diamond sector—and Botswana’s diamond mines in particular—is a vital source of revenue for the country and contributes significantly to the funding of education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
