Have you seen this? Why gold is suddenly so hot (and what Ukraine has to do with it)

Okay, imagine this: you check your phone and BAM—news breaks that Russia has fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) at Ukraine for the first time. This isn’t just a minor warning—it’s a serious move. It’s only natural that the whole world holds its breath for a moment. And what happens? The price of gold skyrockets.

And honestly, that’s not so surprising. Gold is kind of like the thick winter coat of the financial world—when a storm hits, people instinctively want to wrap themselves up in it. And let’s be honest: with everything that’s going on, it sure feels like a major snowstorm right now, doesn’t it?

What's going on in Ukraine?

Let me fill you in. Some strange things have happened over the past few days:

• Intercontinental missile?!

Yes, really. For the first time, Russia has fired an intercontinental long-range missile at Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian military, the missile was aimed at the Kharkiv region and was intended to strike military infrastructure. The fact that they’re using weapons like this speaks volumes about how far Russia is willing to go.

• NATO and Poland

Meanwhile, Russia says that a new NATO air defense base in Poland is now on its list of potential targets. Great. Threats like this make everything even more tense.

• Reconstruction in Ukraine

Why are gold prices skyrocketing?

Gold is simply the place to be when the world is turned upside down. It always has been. People want security, and you won’t find that in stocks when a missile suddenly flies across the border. Gold simply holds its value, whether it’s war, inflation, or a stock market crash.

So what now? The price is around €2,450 per ounce. That’s ridiculously high. But with all the anxiety over nuclear weapons, energy prices going through the roof, and Russia continuing to stoke tensions, investors are flocking to gold as if it were free beer.

Should you buy gold right now?

Okay, this is where it gets interesting for you: is now the time to buy some gold yourself? Look, if you’re looking for a safe place to put your savings, gold isn’t a bad idea. But keep in mind: it won’t make you rich overnight. It’s more like a kind of insurance in case everything around you falls apart. Kind of like a good savings account, but shiny.

What else is involved?

Look, it's not just those rockets that affect the price of gold. Here are a few other things you should know:

1. Interest Rates: If interest rates remain low, gold becomes more attractive, since you aren't earning any interest on your savings anyway.

2. Inflation: The faster prices rise, the more people want gold as a hedge.

3. The dollar: When the dollar weakens, gold prices surge. And as it happens, the dollar is taking a bit of a beating because of the whole situation.

So, what now?

Listen, it never ceases to fascinate me to see how gold always becomes that safe haven when the world seems to be on fire. Whether you decide to do something with it or just sit back and watch, one thing is certain: this conflict and these tensions will continue to drive up prices for the foreseeable future.

So keep an eye on the news, think about what you want to do with your money, and don’t take any crazy risks. And who knows, maybe you’ll end up with a nice gold bar on your shelf someday. Or maybe not—that’s cool, too. But remember: the world can always get even crazier. 🪙

Cheers, and let me know what you think!

P.S. This is not investment advice.
